Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by the mother, grandmother, and her godparents. Her father was absent from her family. While a small infant, Ford struggled with obsessive/compulsive disorders and anxiety caused through word-related associations. Ford's passion for acting started when she was young. She joined at the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After just a few weeks, she realized it was not suitable for her. Ford was then able to apply for a place at the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. The actor was later to play recurring roles as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut when she appeared on Surgical Spirit in an episode from 1990. Ford took the professional name of Catherine Tate. Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties with shows such as The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate also regularly worked in the theatre, and later joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season of 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up comedy that she started adding to her show in the year 1996, was soon gaining the attention of her peers.
